2 days in the snow, learning Avalanche Skills from a certified female instructor and guide.
With a bunch of stoked sisters, in a private group with a maximum of 8 students.
No rush, no pressure, all questions allowed, laughing, and good vibes.
Is this for me?
If you are ok with skiing blue runs in the resort, and you are stoked to get into the backcountry, this course is for you.
What am I going to learn?
We will follow the Avalanche Canada curriculum of the Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 and everyone who participated will get a certificate at the end of the course.
The curriculum includes:
- avalanche formation and release.
- identify avalanche terrain.
- the basics of trip planning.
- optimal use of tools and resources like the avalanche forecasts to mitigate your avalanche risk.
- use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.
- companion rescue using beacon, shovel, probe.
Besides just “getting it done” we will talk about group dynamics as well, and more importantly how you can be a valuable backcountry “sister” out there.
Why is important to bring your own opinion to a day in the backcountry? Where to look up important information and which infos are important? Which of those millions of apps out there are the best to plan a trip with? Which weather forecast is the right one?

We run this course through Canada West Mountain School which has permits for the land we teach on and is an official backcountry operation. Ahead of the 2 field days, you will get a link to an online learning tool. At your own pace, you can self-study all the theory needed for the course from home.
