THE DETAILS

We will start in Sitka Farm’s coyz barn, looking at overnight gear, setting it up, trying it out, and packing it in our packs the right way. No gear? No problem! Learn what to buy. New gear? Bring it and try it!! Too much gear? We’ll happily give you a shake down.

Gear Swap: Bring all gear you don’t need (anymore). Maybe someone who’s just getting into backpacking can get going with it! Have a long “gear to buy” list?! Bring some cash, maybe someone wants to get rid of what you were looking for.

Next we will look at a proper trip planning process. What are the pieces to the puzzle, where to find proper information for terrain, weather forecast and access, and which apps do you (not) want to use.

We will have an introductory look at maps+compass. There are some towering peaks in the Tantalus range, right in the backyard of Sitka Farms; learn how to take your first bearings and how to figure out where you are.

Once we are outside for that, we’ll move into Sitka Farm’s magical backyard, a proper PNW rainforest. We will learn some essential survival skills – how to build a shelter and make a fire. We will also talk about how to choose a campsite in the wilderness and how to properly hang a bear bag.

After we learned how to actually be safe on our backpacking trip, we will end the day with what we actually venture into the backcountry for, make your soul smile. Cami will guide you through a forest yoga session, which will be specifically for the aching hiking body. You will learn poses and stretches which you can easily do in the backcountry after a big day in the mountains, on your thermarest, watching the sunset. Are you stoked yet?!

And of course, the main reason you want to join this – you’ll meet some other local stoked women! Maybe your future adventure buddy???
